Captain’s Pick 3- October 2010

11 Oct

by Captain Oblivious

Welcome back to another thrilling edition of the Captain’s Pick 3. Ahh October is here bringing with it cool weather and a month filled with horror movies. Unless you live where I do and it happens to be October 11 and it is 93 degrees outside. Nature is a fickle mistress. Anyway let’s roll…..

3. Taco Bell

I told you the Pick 3 could be anything. Why Taco Bell you may ask? Well because as a person of limited fundage the bell of taco has kept food in my gullet on a regular basis for a long time. Now add in the 2 dollar combos and two new sauces (verde and fire roasted FYI) and Taco Bell is going to have a big October in my house….and colon.

2. Jackass 3D

Am I really that immature? I just put Taco Bell as my third most important thing in October so you tell me. Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Ryan Dunn and the rest of the crew return to try and make me dry heave again only this time in the full wonder of the third dimension. HIGH FIVE!!

1. Fable 3

Ok I admit. I am a Peter Molyneux apologist. Does he over-promise on every game he has ever been involved in? Yes but that doesn’t mean that they are not fun, quality games. I put over 80 hours in Fable 2 and still did not complete all the side quests. It was one of my favorite games two years ago and I am super psyched about the third installment which has you building an army of followers to take over the throne of Albion. But when you do become ruler how will you rule? With a gentle heart or an iron fist? Hmmm can’t wait to see.

Superman News Is A Face Punch Full Of Awesome

14 Sep

First up is the new teaser spot for the season premiere of Smallville’s final season. The 10 second spot shows what some fans have waited ten years to see.

Smallville lost me for about six years but it looks like I will be going back for the final go round.

Next up is the big rumor of the day. That Warner Bros. is seriously talking about wanting Mad Men’s Jon Hamm as the new Superman. I think I would file this under “greatest casting ever”. Hamm looks the part and God knows from Mad Men he can act. I hope Jonah Nolan and Christopher “the godfather” Nolan will take him under serious consideration.

I love Dolph Lundgren. Ivan Drago. The Punisher. He-Man. Unicorn hater.

So Thaaaat’s What Happened To Han’s Cargo.

Well here is another age old question from the Star Wars universe answered. Why did Han Solo drop his cargo at the first sign of the Empire. Daniel Smith a student at the Digital Animation & Visual Effects School won the Best Animation Award at the Star Wars Fan Movie Championship for this short that has the feel of a real Han & Chewie adventure.

And what is the cargo you might ask? Just the most dangerous thing in the galaxy.

Batman and Robin…..and Batman

31 Aug

by Captain Oblivious

Grant Morrison keeps the Batman psycho-train rolling on and on. After the R.I.P. storyline which to quote someone “makes about as much sense as putting nips on the Bat-suit” and having Bruce Wayne disappear or die or reincarnate or whatever after Final Crisis, turning him into a time traveler and then…….you know what my brain hurts I am going to stop there.

Long story short Bruce Wayne is back from wherever the heck he was. Maybe he was using a TARDIS to jump from reality to reality I guess we’ll never know but anyway he’s back. And if you thought it was as simple as Dick Grayson (the current Batman) handing over the cape and cowl while he goes back to being Nightwing then your mistaken. Grayson will still be Batman….and so will Bruce Wayne. Yep. Batmen. Oh yeah and Bruce’s son Damien will still be Robin only he will be Robin to Grayson’s Batman not Bruce’s.

By the way if you are really out of the loop yes Bruce Wayne has a son and that is for an even longer post.

Apparently Dick and Damien will be patrolling the streets of Gotham City still while Bruce will take his Batman global. And just so there is no confusion they will wear different costumes. Dick will have the old school black bat and Bruce will have the black and yellow variety. Best yet it seems that traveling through the DeLorean has made Bruce want to take Batman into the franchising business. His global plan will be to have a small army of Batmen thus killing the point of Batman’s whole “what can one man do” thing. So while Dick and Damien swing around Gotham Bruce will be busy being the Sam Walton of superheros.

Thanks Grant. Really.

San Diego Comic Con 2010 Sunday Lineup

16 Jul

by: Captain Oblivious

Whew….after what Saturday holds Sunday is a nice slowdown with a whole lot of TV panel discussions. For the poor folks like me that can not go to San Diego it is a chance to catch back up with life…or lack thereof. Let’s see what will be closing out the 2010 San Diego Comic Con.

Tribute To Jack Kirby (10:00-11:00)

– The legend who helped create the Fantastic Four, Captain America and The Hulk to name a few is always a great topic of interest at Comic Con. Biographer Mark Evanier moderates this open discussion about a true comic genius.

Smallville (10:00-11:00)

– Who woulda thunk it. Smallville is entering it’s tenth season! And while I lost interest in Smallville around season 3 amazingly the show has gotten very good again in it’s eighth and ninth seasons. With this being the final season what does the future hold? Stars Tom Welling, Erica Durance and producers talk about what to expect.

Castle (10:30-11:30)

– I am a huge Nathan Fillion fan but haven’t watched one episode of Castle yet. I am glad he has finally gotten a good hit show going though.

Supernatural (11:15-12:15)

– Now that creator Eric Kripke’s five year story arc has concluded he has stepped aside and is taking on an advisory role. Stars Jenson Ackles and Jared Padelecki along with creator Eric Kripke and new show runner Sera Gamble will show footage from the upcoming sixth season and discuss what the shows’ future will hold.

Merlin (11:45-12:45)

– Before you say anything no this is not a special about former football great and flower pusher Merlin Olsen. Anthony Stewart Head (of Buffy and more or less Repo fame) stars as the titular character, the wizard Merlin. Already a hit internationally this will be the first Comic Con panel for the show.

American Dad (12:30-1:15)

– Call me crazy but the last two seasons of American Dad have actually had more laughs than Family Guy. Seth and Rachael MacFarlane will show a new episode of American Dad as well as talk about the new season which will have the 100th episode.

Glee (1:30-2:30)

– The new “it” show returns for it’s second Comic Con. Stars and creator Ryan Murphy will share what season two will hold. I am guessing singing, dancing and more stories of homosexual intolerance.

Sons of Anarchy and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2:45-3:45)

– Two of my favorite shows back to back. Hard to believe that Sunny is going into it’s sixth season. And yet it still remains as funny as the first.

Buffy the Musical (4:00-5:00)

– A screening of the musical Buffy episode “Once More With Feeling” with a decidedly Rocky Horror twist. Audience members are encouraged to sing a long, dance around the ballroom and basically act like they are in the episode…..I wish I was there.

Like i said this is the closing day so it is a way lighter schedule. You can see the complete Sunday lineup here
